Central Avenue near 108th: a counter in the old town
Sutherland has a storefront lender on Central Avenue near 108th Street, among the small shops and the bank that make up the old railway town's main street, so a counter is a walk for most of the neighbourhood and a stop on the Central Avenue bus for the rest. Buses along Central and 108th connect to the university a few minutes away and to the rest of the east side.
A student or a hospital worker on the way home from campus can stop at the counter, but the hours rarely match a night lab or an evening shift. Online covers those: five minutes on a phone, a read-only bank connection that shows the lender 90 days of deposits, and an e-transfer into the same account the campus pay lands in. The online loans Saskatoon page covers the route and the licence check that comes first.
Both charge $14 per $100. The Central Avenue counter buys cash the same hour and one lender's offer; the phone buys several offers and no walk in January.
Semi-monthly campus pay, hospital shifts and the rail yard
Sutherland paycheques come from the University of Saskatchewan on a semi-monthly cycle, from hospital shifts on a biweekly one, and from rail work on a biweekly one with overtime, so a payday loan here runs 13 to 18 days for campus staff and about 14 for everyone else. A student with a part time campus job is on the semi-monthly cycle too, and can qualify on that job's income at 18 or older.
The campus calendar is the Sutherland trap. Part time hours shrink between terms and disappear over the summer for many students, so a loan sized to a March cheque and debited against a May one is how an NSF happens. Borrow against the smallest cheque you expect in the next two months, and keep it small: $200 costs $28.
Rail overtime swings with the season the same way, and the fix is the same: size to the light cheque and tell the lender before the due date if hours were cut.
What loans in Sutherland cost
A payday loan in Sutherland costs $14 for every $100 borrowed, so $200 is repaid as $228 and $500 as $570, and because the cap is provincial the Central Avenue counter charges exactly what a counter on 8th Street East, a counter on 22nd Street West or an online lender charges. Being near campus does not make it a student rate.
| Amount borrowed | Fee at $14 per $100 | Total repayable |
|---|---|---|
| $100 | $14 | $114 |
| $300 | $42 | $342 |
| $500 | $70 | $570 |
| $1000 | $140 | $1140 |
| $1500 | $210 | $1710 |
An installment loan of $500 to $10000 at 18% to 35% APR takes a monthly payment over 3 to 60 months and is the shape for anything that will not clear on one cheque. The payday loans Saskatoon page works the fee for the semi-monthly cycle, and the installment loans Saskatoon page has the monthly table.
Payday or installment on the campus calendar
Payday loans in Sutherland fit a one time gap under half a cheque inside a term: a textbook and a bus pass in the same week, a room deposit due before the 15th, a phone that died before an exam. They do not fit the stretch between terms with no hours, a tuition balance, a bill over $1500, or a gap that comes back every month of the year.
The gap between terms is an income problem that a 14 day fee makes worse, and the Saskatoon loan FAQ covers the cheaper answers, a campus emergency bursary and an employer advance among them. A tuition balance or a laptop plus a car repair belongs on the installment page, repaid monthly, and a thin student credit file is read on deposits first, as the bad credit loans Saskatoon page explains.
North up Central Avenue, University Heights and Forest Grove have the suburban centre plazas and owner households; west across campus, Nutana has the same student rentals with no counter at all.
The Saskatchewan rules that protect a Sutherland borrower
The Central Avenue counter and every online lender serving a Sutherland address must be licensed by the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) under The Payday Loans Act, which gives you until the end of the next business day to cancel at no cost, bans rollovers and a second loan while one is open, caps the loan at 50% of the net paycheque it comes out of, and requires the cost in dollars before you sign.
Saskatchewan does not provide an automatic extended payment plan, so if hours dropped, call before the due date and ask for a split. Complaints go to the FCAA, and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains the alternatives in plain language.
Loans Saskatoon is a free loan connection service, not a lender. The main Saskatoon loans page compares the two products, and the areas we serve hub covers the rest of the east side.
Apply online from SutherlandLoans in Sutherland FAQ
Can an international student apply for a payday loan in Sutherland?
The application needs Canadian residency, a Canadian chequing account and employment income, so a student with a part time job, an account at a Canadian bank and a Saskatchewan address can apply. Study permit rules on work hours are separate from the loan.
My campus pay comes on the 15th and the last day. When would the debit hit?
On the next of those two dates, so a loan taken on the 3rd is due on the 15th and one taken on the 20th is due at month end. The fee is the same $14 per $100 either way, so borrowing closer to the pay date is better value.
Is the Central Avenue counter cheaper than going to 8th Street?
No. Every licensed counter in Saskatchewan charges $14 per $100, and so does every licensed website. The only reason to go anywhere else is to compare offers, and applying online does that from your room.
What if my part time hours end in April and the loan is due in May?
Do not take it. A payday loan is due on the next pay date, and if there is no pay date the debit bounces and adds an NSF charge to the fee. Size the loan to a cheque you are certain will arrive.
